Well, what do you believe?
"What about you professor? What do you believe?"
This question was posed by a college student to professor John Koestler (Nicolas Cage), a man of Science and Reason. His response reveals his worldview: events just happen, life has no purpose. But soon he is faced with circumstances he cannot avoid or explain away. Catastrophic events that appear to be leading up to... the end of the world.
At our last DECODER RING we discussed the film's assertion that passages in Ezekiel can be uniquely interpreted, and we looked at the source material where the idea of angels as aliens originated. We noted the director's proclivity toward darkness and fatalism, and how that philosophy has permeated our culture.
Despite the film's premise that somehow the sequence of events leading to the apocalypse can be tracked, Jesus himself said, "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father." (Matthew 24:36)
God is in control. In His time, the world will not end, but change. The Bible speaks of a New Heaven and a New Earth (Revelation 22:1) and the reign of King Jesus, an everlasting kingdom. So there is, ultimately, nothing to fear for those who are in Christ Jesus.
All of us eventually arrive at a crossroads in our lives. Why am I here? Is there a plan? These are heavy questions, and many people spend their time avoiding the reality of the implications.
How about you? Are you in Christ Jesus? Do you know what that means?

As always, we finished up our meeting with special prayers for the filmmakers. This DECODER RING was a bit different however, as we began to pray for the director's next project as well. Alex Proyas is currently working on PARADISE LOST, John Milton's famous poem, a secular mash-up of The Garden of Eden and The Fall of Man.
Lucifer is portrayed as a sympathetic creature, and he will be played in the film by the handsome and charismatic actor Bradley Cooper. This production, with today's technology for visual effects will be key in how our increasingly godless culture perceives Sin, Satan, Hell and Humanity.
Please keep praying for the filmmakers and Hollywood. The time is short. The truth must be made known.
